Oberammergau - Follow Me To Amazing Places

Oberammergau

THE STORY ABOUT THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY …where the passion lives forever

Performed every 10 years in Oberammergau, Germany. RESERVE YOUR SEAT NOW FOR 2020 It began in 1633.

The town of Oberammergau was suffering from the Bubonic Plague. The villagers appealed for Divine intervention to save their families. They vowed that if they would be spared, they would perform a Passion Play every ten years. This happened and the plague ended. The villagers kept their promise and the first play was performed in 1634 and every ten years thereafter.

THE NEXT PERFORMANCE WILL BE IN 2020, and we at Travel To Amazing Places are pleased that we are offering 12 Day Escorted Tours to visit Oberammergau and attend the Passion Play, in addition to visiting other Bavarian communities. More than a half million attended in 2010. I was there in 2010, but not during the months The Play was performed. We did, however, experience the energy and excitement as the residents of Oberammergau were preparing for the opening of the 2010 Performance and I knew that if I was still alive in 2020 I would return with a ticket to The Play. Visiting Oberammergau was truly an unforgettable experience.

You are probably wondering what makes this event so special that it attracts half a million people from all over the world? Well, you have to go there to meet the people and experience their wonderful hospitality, great food and drink, and explore shops which house their long tradition of woodcarving. This breathtakingly beautiful Bavarian town located approximately 60 miles from Munich and between Germany´s highest mountain, the “Zugspitze” and Neuschwanstein Castle, in the heart of the Bavarian Alps. Here you will experience their passion to honor their pledge from generation to generation.

The Play is planned and performed by the residents of Oberammergau. In fact, you must be a resident of Oberammergau to be in the play. Over 2,000 residents are involved in the acting, singing, music and technical support. There are approx. 124 speaking roles, a 65-member orchestra, a 48-person chorus and hundreds of people who are involved, including, stagehands, seamstresses, firemen, auditorium attendants and more. Men grow out their hair and beards in keeping with the authentic look of the time, and costumes are hand-made.

Performances are held May through late September or early October 5 days per week in the open-air theater which seats about 5,000 people. The performance begins at 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. There is a dinner break, and the play resumes from 8:00 to 10:30 p.m.
